What are trail cameras or camera traps?

A camera trap is not a big man trap catching poor cameras that trip into its jaws?..Don't run, they are cracking little motion activated cameras, recording moving creatures in front of it.  Trail cameras can seem a mystery, but don't worry, they are very useful gadgets to have.

Over the years, we have supplied many thousands of trail cameras to individuals and to large institutions like the BBC, WWF, National Trust to name a few. What are they, where do they come from?
